Is American Dream Possible?
In our lives we often dream of the perfect American Dream. American Dream is the idea that everyone in America has the same rights to achieve that we desire and be granted the same opportunities to do so. But I wonder is this truly possible?
In The Great Gatsby, we see how Gatsby became wealthy and the story was that Gatsby, the son of poor farmers is granted an opportunity to travel with a wealthy men and that prompts him to chase the "American Dream". We see that in the end, he does achieve that: he becomes so wealthy that he throws parties every week and have famous celebrities and powerful people invited to his parties. He even eventually gets to be united with the love of his life, Daisy. However, even with all of this improvement and glamorous living, he isn't accepted into the "old money". Tom Buchanan, the husband of Daisy, called him, "Mr. Nobody from Nowhere," referencing that he does not have a wealthy background and that he became rich out of nowhere, hence, disapproving him. The American Dream seems to function that same way. It may seem like the American Dream can get you higher in life and in status, but in the end, it doesn't truly get you the through the entrenched "social class".
However, it is needless to say that even with the hardships, the real essence of the American Dream is that there is still hope. One great example of this would be former President Barack Obama. He was raised by a single mom and he did not come from wealth or political power. In the end, he graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School, ultimately becoming the first African American president of the United States.
Reality is this: it is very difficult even with the freedom that America has, to break through the social barriers but it is possible, and that hope is the American Dream.

I really like how you connected Gatsby's dream to Obama's sucess in the US. I also noticed how Gatsby never could make it up the social class, and I really do wonder why connections, even still to this day, continue to only get you accepted into certain parts of society.
ReplyDeleteI like how you challenged the claim that to be rich and famous, you have to start from a rich family. I’ve always wondered why are the rich separated by family history and new people, but the great Gatsby highlights this well.
ReplyDeleteLoved how you talked about the harsh social barriers in our world and the Gatsby’s. Very much talking about the "American Dream" cause its a big thing in America and you talk about how the american dream is only the American dream sometimes. Also liked your reference to former President Barack Obama
